The tricorder I’d been using to locate her bio-signature clatters to the ground as I run to her disturbingly still form. Rage burns inside me and threatens to incapacitate me at the sight of her face-down in an alleyway. The uniform that was pristine only 20 minutes ago now rumpled, scratched, and soaked. I try to ignore the twisted arm and leg at as I turn her sputtering face from the wide, shallow puddle she was deposited in. Her four pips and combadge are gone, her face pale where it is not crimson, her lips and the skin around her neck hint a shade of purple. I’m unsure if her eyes see me through their swolen sockets as I gather her into my arms and call for the transport.
Tears stream down my face as I lift her onto the biobed and she makes a strangled cry. The EMH works with the surgical bay up. It’s nothing but white noise. Muddy damp strands of aurburn hair pass under my fingertips as I smooth them back from her face. Angling my tears so they do not slip onto her, I murmer sweet words close to her head and ignore that she’s been mouthing and trying to say the words “I’m sorry,” over and over.
Break my heart, BB!! 😭😭😭😭
